a Day in the Life of Shop Gotham: Uniglo and +J – steal the show

Friday, February 19th, 2010

So… we at Shop Gotham recently took some major fashion magazine editors shopping. Would love to drop names but  alas, cannot. Suffice it to say, these stylin’ gals have seen it all and then some. They had just come from the top 2010 fashion “shows” in Bryant Park, have been courted directly by all important designers and likely over time received plentiful freebies. So we hit some of the uberfab independents in NYC.  Yes, they loved Kirna Zabete, Deco Jewels, and Opening Ceremony. But where did they drop their $?? At UNIGLO!!! They were pumped up about the new + J line (Jil Sander), specifically the black jackets in 3 lengths, which are oh so Prada reminiscent, but a mere $79- $99. Who would have thunk?   www.shopgotham.com

Garment Center Shopping Tour Review

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

A shoppers delight (domestic visitor): Rating: 5 stars

“Myself [ 54 ] , daughter [ 24 ] and daughter-in-law took the shopping tour in the garment district. After spending 4 days shopping, we were’nt very excited to go on a shopping tour! But what a successful trip it was! Our guide was awesome and had loads of information, including suggesting some places to go after in other areas. We went to six very different designer showrooms.which had a varied selection of products and each of us found lots of things. I would reccomend it!.” www.shopgotham.com

3 Reasons NYC Rocks

Friday, November 13th, 2009

1)Even if you cant afford one item at Bergdorf Goodman, anyone can wander in and almost always spot a celeb. Last week Kelsey Grammer and wife spotted in shoe dept.  PS. Fine dept stores are also very useful for their lovely bathrooms.

2)Street Vendors in Soho.  Some of the best authentic jewelry, hats, art & whatnot are sold on the streets of Soho. Talented folks without the overhead of stores, create and sell edgy & trendy at a fraction of the stores’ prices. TIP: The exception is those located on Broadway. These vendors sell the mass merch shipped in overseas.

3)Because some of the best music can be heard in the subways.

Shop Gotham to Hunt for the High Designers at the Low End

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

You keep reading about all those top name designers, such as Jil Sander and Jimmy Choo, who are now designing for the “cheap shops”? Or how Kate Moss and former Project Runway contestant have their own lines? What you don’t know is that only SOME stores will carry these goods, but Manhattan ones will get the booty first.

Each week on our Soho & Nolita shopping tour, we will seek out some of these “hot” items.  Come check it out with us!  www.shopgotham.com/daily-new-york-shopping-tours.php

NYC Must: Exploring Central Park

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

The summer may be coming to a close, but outside it is still definitely hot hot hot!! When visitng NYC, you must spend some time outdoors at our world-famous Central Park. It’s accessible, offers tons of different sights, and is absolutely gorgeous. Grab a map and explore these great places: One is The Pool, between West 100 to 103rd streets, a body of water shaded by weeping willows and a collection of other pretty trees and nature. Similarly, The Pond (below) in the southeast corner of the park is an extremely attractive area, beautiful and shielded from Manhattan street noise by trees and rocks.

The Ramble (below) is a famous part of the park running from 73rd to 79th streets in the middle section, an entirely man-made sprawl designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and carved out of natural hillside. Feel free to lose yourself in this 38-acre expanse of pathways, cliffs, and streams—both figuratively and literally! It can be easy to get lost here, so remember that map!

If you won’t be visiting until the leaves fall and that cold weather returns, a trip to Wollman Memorial Skating Rink on East 62nd street is a must, offering a spacious ice-skating area, a great view of the famed Duck Pond, and plenty of time for handholding and couples skating. Winter admission is affordable, running $8.50 for adults and $4.25 for children. Curl up with a cup of hot chocolate and snacks at nearby concession stands.

There are so many neigborhoods in the city, you can’t seem ‘em all…but you sure can try! Get guided exclusive access to our hip, downtown neighborhoods through our Shop Gotham tours, and cap off the day by heading uptown and exploring the Central Park spots mentioned in this post!

  • For delicious Thai food in a stylish and unique setting, try Peep (177 Prince St.).  A very trendy dinner spot, Peep (pictured below) also offers amazing multi-course lunch deals for under $10!
