WHAT TO WEAR WHEN VISITING NYC

TIPS FOR SPRING 2009
With temps to be in the 70’s in May and June, spring is a magnificent time to visit NYC. Style will be out on the streets as natives anxiously claw their way out of their winter coats.

Fundamentals:

• NYC style is all about casual chic, which is fundamentally different than barbecue casual.
• If you prefer or must wear sneakers, a bevy of cute affordable options are available and preferable to your white Nikes. Turquoise, red, taupe or patterned cuties by Keds, Van or others.

Spring 09 overview

This season little dresses again trump skirts. Gauzy scarves still adorn the necks of young & old (find a fab one on our Garment Center “Insider shopping tours - www.shopgotham.com) and boots are now a 4-season item. You can never fail with black but New Yorkers are no longer clad top to bottom in black, especially in warm weather. Color reins supreme this season. Bright huges (yellow, purple midnight blue) leave your pastels home. Jeans are always in style, but not your old beat up ones (or acid wash!). Wear dark blue skinny jeans or the current wide leg sailor version. For the younger gals, Single-shouldered dresses and tops have also made a huge return in 2009.

Tangible Suggestions:

For daytime walking, shopping, touring, lunching, museum visits:

• Little” cotton or linen dress (shift style); flat gladiator-style sandals or low flat boots; large framed  sunglasses
• Long casual solid colored gauzy or 60’s patterned dress, flat gladiator style sandals, lots of bangles

Evening – traditional dinner & theater

• Pair either daytime option with a solid color cardigan and a long chunky faux necklace
• Pair jeans with dressed-up chic top and high platform sandals

Note to theater goers: as disappointing as it may be to some, most people do not ”dress” for the theater. If you sport cocktail or formal attire, you will scream tourist. If you don’t care, go for it!

For Evening – trendy cocktails and dinner

• Well fitting current blue or white jeans; stylish top in a bright color, platform sandals; small handbag or oversized clutch

• Sexier-style little dress (keep it simple. Nothing you would wear to a wedding!); platform sandals
